William Safire, Friend of Language

In spite of the fact that he once wrote speeches for Richard Nixon, William Safire, who is dead at age 79, was a great friend of language and its precise use, as well as an enemy of political language that people used to mislead, lie, twist, and spin. (One wonders what Safire thought of Bill O’Reilly, a human top, who spins nightly in the No-Spin Zone. Spinner, unspin yourself.) Here is a link to an obituary:
