Hard To Conquer, Easy To Hold, and Vice Versa

I just ran across a pleasing discussion of Machiavelli, in which the author, C. Bush, presents a quotation from The Prince that certainly seems to apply to current conditions. The prince is advised to pay attention to “the differences between states that are difficult to conquer but relatively easy to hold, and those that are relatively easy to conquer but would prove difficult to hold.” The title of the C. Bush’s blog-post [2007] is “The Idiot Prince.”
